Are you ready yet? Have you started to throttle your work for the week, arrange a backup, even packed a bag? The 2014 IDUG Technical Conference is only a week away.
Ember did a fantastic job on her IDUG write-up, so I am not going to duplicate her effort. However, I do want to relay a few tidbits of information.
The most obvious is that I will be presenting two sessions this year. Session D05 “Attack of the LOB” is an hour-long session on the same topic as my final DB2’s Got Talent presentation. I will be discussing how DB2 internally handles LOBs, why they degrade performance, and what can be done to speed them up. I seriously pulled my database out of a ditch with these methods. We will be discussing topics such as INLINE LOBs, filesystem caching, and the NOT LOGGED feature. It is early at 8:00am on Wed so pump yourself full of the caffeine of your choice and grab a seat. Just do me a favor: this isn’t your 8am college course, so don’t show up in PJ’s and bunny slippers.
On Thursday, I will be pairing up with DB2 power-house Ember Crooks to present at 9:15am. We will be discussing two types of high availability and disaster recovery in D10’s “High availability two-step”. Ember has deep knowledge of DB2’s HADR feature and can pretty much make a server do back-flips on command if needed. Then I am on deck and will discuss how I got tossed into a fire and had to learn AIX’s Power HA (HACMP). Between the two areas of discussion you will take away a good high-level overview of the two methods as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Ember mentioned this but I want to reinforce the importance of the Dine Around on Thursday night. On my first dine around I met Fred Sobotka (@db2fred) and talked to him for an hour. Other years I sat with other performance and tuning experts and IBM big wigs. It is a great way to network and get to know some DB2 Rock Stars. If you want to hob-knob with the cool kids, Ember will be a host with Melanie Stopfer at Pizzaria Bianco. I am not sure which Dine Around I am signing up for yet. I will either be looking to sign up with Scott Hayes or the wonder twins Melanie and Ember. On Tuesday, immediately after the spotlight (or keynote) session, hoof it to the message board or registration desk to sign up (location of the sheets vary).
By the way, do me a favor and tweet! I get so much out of the IDUG conference tweets and will adjust my schedule accordingly. If I see a certain speaker get rave reviews, I go to another session or download the slides. Sometimes I hear of good networking events, restaurants, or see a picture of a session speaker and can put a face to the name. I’ve been tweeting under the IDUG official Twitter handle @idugdb2 for years. Now that the job has been passed to another, I will be active using @mkrafick.
