It’s that magical time of year again.
DBAs excitedly pack their bags for a week-long trip. On-call rotation is hurriedly passed to the next poor soul on the rotation list. Ember dons her trademark pigtails. Melanie Stopfer crams another 20 slides into and already packed presentation.
It’s time for the IDUG North American Technical Conference in Anaheim, California. All your favorite presenters will be there. Presenters such as Matt Huras, Ember Crooks, Melanie Stopfer and everyone in between.
Even I will be presenting this year. I am going back to rework a topic that inspired me for my first co-presentation with Pavel Sustr in 2012. Tuesday, May 2nd at 8:00 AM I will be presenting D05: “10 Minute Triage: Troubleshooting Production Issues 101” in North Exhibit Hall Rooms G&H .
This session was developed to be a complimentary session to the much deeper troubleshooting deep dive within Pavel Sustr’s “DB2 Forensic Investigation” series.
“Ten Minute Triage” is designed for administrators crossing over from development to production support, database administrators cross-trained from other disciplines, or junior to mid level DBAs.
This session will tackle multiple topics:
- Financial impact of system downtime (Here is a hint, think $600,000 an hour)
- Telling the difference between pain and efficiency problems and what metrics reflect each
- Common bottle necks including a very confusing “Lazy Bottle Neck”
- Developing an assessment plan and triage tool box.
As all the bombs and missiles explode over your head, this session will help you find the root cause of a production outage quickly.
Here is the interesting part. You get to influence part of the presentation.
As an experiment, I am working on developing a new “Triage Kit” of SQL that can be used during an outage or as an early warning system. This SQL is compiled from my own toolkit as well as a crowdsourcing effort with the DB2 community through the fledgling /r/DB2 subreddit. Once complete, I hope to have a very cool collection of SQL and scripts that can be pulled from github for general use. Over time, I expect this to grow and get more elaborate.

As a side note, my session date and time may be listed differently in the agenda until we get closer to May. In an effort to help another presenter I have agreed to swap presentation times. My session will be D05 at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, May 2nd, not at 10:30 AM as originally scheduled.
